What we did for (and with) you in the workplace in 2024

The CSP is constantly striving to support, safeguard and improve our members’ health and wellbeing in the workplace. Some highlights from 2024

Equality reps

We confirmed equality reps as a permanent UK-wide reps’ network alongside CSP stewards and safety reps, following a successful pilot launched in 2021. This significantly boosts our ability to challenge workplace discrimination faced by our members. CSP equality reps.

Pride

CSP members attended Belfast Pride for the first time, riding on the fire engine of our FBU union colleagues. We also attended Foyle Pride and, once again, London Pride.

Internationally educated staff

A CSP motion on international recruits passed at TUC Cymru stimulated joint union work coordinated by the TUC

Our equality reps and national network of regional reps were trained on supporting internationally trained members in the workplace.

Learning boost

We launched an accredited stage two experiential learning course for stewards, giving them structured support whilst carrying out workplace projects. 220+ workplace reps completed induction training.

Legal support

We supported members in 56 HCPC cases; handled 92 employment law cases; reached 12 settlement agreements and made legal referrals for employment advice to 24 members.

NHS pay

CSP members were awarded a 5.5 per cent rise in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for 2024/25, and accepted the same offer in Scotland.

Through the Pay Review Body process – and in Scotland, direct negotiations with the government – the CSP is pursuing an above-inflation pay rise for 2025/26. NHS pay across the UK.

On-call

We launched a digital resource hub to assist members and reps to secure improvements in policies and practice, and shape service redesign. We held a popular ‘organising clinic’ on this theme. CSP on-call hub.

Empowered reps

Our more senior reps engaged more with planning and delivering the activation, recruitment and support of members and reps in the workplace; our lay rep leadership renewed successfully; and our reps made a big impact at the CSP annual representative conference: CSP stewards.

Talk about flex

The CSP and NHS trade unions launched a new campaign to promote flexible working for all staff. Let's talk about flex.

Organising clinics

Over 1,100 reps, activists, members and non-members (we are seeking to recruit) attended online interactive monthly sessions on NHS pay, facilities time, mileage and expenses, health, safety and wellbeing, flexible working, reasonable adjustments, internationally educated physios, new band 5s and student reps. Organising and campaigning on workplace issues.

Rep of the year awards

A record 84 nominations recognising the fantastic work and achievements of our workplace reps were received this year. Reps of the year awards 2024.

Trade union influencing

The CSP amplified the voice of CSP members at TUC Congress and Scottish TUC (and their respective equality conferences), TUC Cymru and Northern Ireland committee of ICTU. The BAME network committee’s Emelie Anekwu was elected to the TUC race relations committee. Steward Julia Clayton was elected to the women’s seat on Wales TUC general council. We increased representation on staff councils and social partnership across the four countries, and maintained joint chair of the NHS Staff Council.

Working conditions

In Scotland, we negotiated with the government and employers to reduce the working week and improve ‘Once for Scotland’ policies.

Workplace support

CSP reps supported thousands of members last year. Organisers visited over 100 workplaces across the UK, informing and listening to over 1,500 physios and support staff, reaching out to non-members and recruiting reps. Complex cases were handled by CSP senior negotiating officers.
